VALORANT: UNITED

Stylized Performance Animation

Reimagining Performance Beyond Motion Capture

Working with Riot Games and The Mill, I helped create stylized character performances for Valorant: United. While motion capture was initially explored as part of the production process, the final performances were rebuilt through animation to achieve the heightened acting, timing, and visual language required by Valorant's distinctive cinematic style.

Inspired by the energy and appeal of modern action anime, the project demanded performances that prioritized personality, readability, and emotional impact over realistic movement.

Defining Valorant's Performance Language

Valorant's visual language demanded performances that were larger than life, blending cinematic action with the stylized appeal of modern animation. The final performances required a level of exaggeration, clarity, and personality that could only be achieved through deliberate acting choices and animation-driven performance.

Working with Riot Games and The Mill, the animation team crafted performances that supported the unique acting style, visual rhythm, and character appeal that define the Valorant universe. The result was a cinematic experience driven by expressive performance choices designed to maximize storytelling and emotional impact.

the challenge

Valorant's distinctive visual style demanded performances that felt grounded enough to support believable action while embracing the heightened appeal and graphic readability of modern animation. Early production efforts focused on motion-capture-driven solutions, but the resulting performances failed to achieve the level of stylization required by the project.

The challenge became establishing a new animation direction, rebuilding performance standards, and leading multiple teams toward a unified visual language capable of supporting Riot's creative vision.

My Contribution

  • Directed animation across multiple internal and external animation teams.

  • Established performance standards for a highly stylized cinematic production.

  • Developed animation direction that emphasized appeal, clarity, and character-driven acting.

  • Mentored artists transitioning from motion-capture workflows to performance-focused animation.

  • Unified teams across multiple locations while maintaining quality and consistency.

  • Collaborated closely with Riot Games, directors, and production leadership throughout development.

  • Personally animated hero sequences to establish quality benchmarks and demonstrate the desired level of stylization, performance, and character appeal.

The Transformation

What began as a production searching for the right performance language evolved into a cohesive animation-driven approach built around character acting, appeal, and visual storytelling. Through stronger acting choices, graphic posing, and clear performance direction, the characters developed a visual language that felt uniquely Valorant while supporting the cinematic's action and emotional beats.

Why It Matters

Stylized animation allows filmmakers to push beyond the limitations of realism and create performances that are more memorable, readable, and emotionally impactful. Valorant demonstrated how animation can be used not simply to replicate movement, but to amplify character, story, and audience connection.

industry impact

Valorant: United reflects the growing demand for stylized storytelling in modern game cinematics. As audiences increasingly expect memorable characters and distinctive visual identities, animation continues to play a critical role in shaping performance, personality, and emotional connection beyond what realism alone can achieve.
