Why Productions Get Stuck
After working across 18 feature films, more than 80 commercials, and 38 AAA games, I have found that most production challenges come back to one of three things.
1. The production lost sight of the plan.
Sometimes there was not enough time to build a complete plan. Sometimes the plan was never fully communicated, tested, or understood across the team. And sometimes the pressure of production pulls everyone toward immediate problems and away from the reason the project began.
A strong plan gives the team a point of reference. It clarifies what they are trying to achieve, which priorities matter most, and how to evaluate the choices in front of them.
Returning to that foundation allows the production to adapt without losing its purpose.
2. The team has become too attached to a decision.
A decision may have been reasonable when it was made, but productions evolve. New information emerges, priorities shift, and tools or circumstances change.
Progress slows when attachment to an idea, process, or previous investment makes that decision difficult to reconsider.
The goal is not to defend the original decision. It is to recognize what the work needs now and make the best choice for the production as it exists today.
3. The technology, workflow, or process is blocking progress.
Production problems often continue because decision-makers cannot see the workarounds happening behind the scenes.
Artists and technical teams may be rebuilding tools, repeating tasks, or creating increasingly complicated processes simply to keep the work moving. What appears to leadership as a minor software expense may actually be costing far more in lost time, duplicated effort, frustration, and inconsistency.
Before building a new approach at scale, I often recommend a focused proof of concept. The team first needs to know that the idea is creatively sound, technically viable, and practical within the realities of production.
The solution may be simple: understand what people are doing out of necessity, bring the right expertise into the conversation, test the idea, and invest in the tool or process that removes the obstacle.
One informed decision can streamline an entire production and make everyone’s job easier.

I start by listening.
I spend time with the people doing the work to understand what they are making, how the production process operates, and why the current tools, workflows, and decisions were developed the way they were.
The people closest to the work usually know where the friction is, even when that information has not reached leadership.
Once I understand the creative goal, the production realities, and the team’s experience, I connect the patterns and help create a practical path forward.
The goal is to solve the immediate challenge while leaving the work, the team, and the process stronger than I found them.
